Musical Instruments

We are making musical instruments for our Takahe class band.
First we had to bring in all the equipment that we needed to make our instrument. Lots of us have had to do experiments to see if we could make a better noise.
For my instrument I taped 8 straws together. After I was allowed to decorate the tape. Everyone put effort into them and I think the Takahe class band will be great!

The Rubbish That Was Left At Mt Manganui Beach

On Thursday 13th October 2011 , my family and I went to Mt Manganui and saw five containers. Three were floating on water and two were on land. One white container had meat patties in it and a red one had long logs.
There was a heap of oil mixed up with the water , you could even see the oil in the pattern of the waves on the sand.My mum got oil stuck on her shoe, the oil looked like grease.

The Life Cycle Of A Butterfly

The Monarch Butterfly is an amazing creature-Caterpillar or Butterfly. Here is it's life cycle:

Stage 1: The Egg

A butterfly lays an egg on a special plant called a Milkweed. It will lay up to 700 eggs in a range of 2-5 weeks.

Stage 2: The Caterpillar

After 2 weeks, what should hatch, but a Monarch Caterpillar! This is the baby Butterfly, or Larvae (pronounced lava). When it hatches it is very hungry, and will eat anything in sight, including the egg.As it eats, it will become 270,000 times it's original weight!
This will force it to shed it's skin. But don't worry. There's always another skin underneath! The average Caterpillar will do this about six times.

Stage 3: The Pupa (Chrysalis)

After shedding all of it's skins, the Caterpillar will curl up in the shape of a j. It will now shed it's skin one last time, except  instead of the skin falling off, it will turn inside-out. The skin will climb up the larvae until it has formed a sort of protective hard shell around the larvae. A butterfly will slowly form, and as it does so, the pupa, or chrysalis, will become thinner and more transparent, until it splits.

Stage 4: The Caterpillar Butterfly

It cannot fly yet as it's wings are wet from the skin, but once it has dried them in the sun it will fly away...

So that is the Monarch Butterfly Life Cycle! Butterflys are so amazing!

The Monarch Butterfly Life-Cycle

Butterflies are small, pretty insects. They have thin , black bodies and antennae. The biggest part of them are their wings. Monarch butterflies have orange and black wings.

First, an adult butterfly lays an egg. Adults can lay 700 eggs in a few weeks. Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed plants. Then the egg hatches. The small caterpillar is called a pupa.

The larva eats everything in sight. Sometimes he sheds his skin. This is called moulting.
The larva becomes 27,000 times the size the weight he was when he hatched.

Once the caterpillar is very big, it curls up in the shape of a J. It moults and the old skin turns inside out, covering the larva. He is now in his coccoon, at the pupa stage.

The coccoon begins to become transparent. After 9-14 days, the coccoon splits and a butterfly comes out. The butterflies' wings are soggy so it pumps liquid into them. Then it lets them dry. Then it can fly away, and lay more eggs.

After the butterfly has laid all it's eggs, it dies. That is
the amazing life-cycle of a butterfly.

Chalk Art

On Monday 5th September 2011 Ramarama School walked happily to the Court. When we arrived Katie and Elena grabbed the Chalk and they started making a rough outline. Our book was "Where The Wild Things Are"!
About 10 minutes later the rest of Takahe got to go to the court. After that we got to colour the picture in. The sea was the hardest bit because we had to use a lot of blue.

All the classes did a book. It looked amazing!

Speeches

For the last few weeks we have been doing a speech competition. We had to put together a good speech on any topic of our choice, then say it in front of our class. The best went to a speech-off against 2 other classes. The best 5 went to a school final, the best speech went into city finals. Then comes the New Zealand finals of witch will conclude the competition. The lengths were: 2:30 =just long enough, 3:00=perfect, 3:30=Maximum length. It has been a lot of fun and I know we have all learnt a lot. Here are some of the speech topics we chose: I did mine on planets. Others included horses, Earth, Electricity, and being a 12-year-old girl.

Sleet!

Today there was sleet at school! We all went to see it at the window. We could see little white things floating to the ground. We found out that sleet was rain and snow together. Sleet turns into water when it touches the ground, but we could see it in the air. Mrs Mackereth and Mrs Macmillin went outside and they said sleet felt like thick rain. It's been a long time since it has snowed in Auckland!

My Trip to Singapore

Last week I went to Singapore with my family on holiday. It was a long plane ride and took nearly 11 hours to get there. It was lucky we had tvs to watch.

It is very hot over there. It was about 31 degrees every day. We went swimming in our hotel pool lots.

We went to the Singapore Zoo. We got to feed the elephants bananas. We saw a show with the sea lion doing lots of tricks and it splashed alot of people. We also saw a show with cats and dogs doing tricks too. We also went on boat and tram rides there.

This spider monkey was walking around outside its cage by itself.

We went to Universal Studios. We went on alot of rides. My favourite was the river raft ride. My Dad and sisters got really soaked and it took them ages to dry out. My Mum and I didn't get wet at all. We went in the fairy castle to watch a Shrek 4D movie. We stayed there from when it opened to when it closed.

There was a lolly shop outside Universal Studios.

We went to Chinatown to the night markets. It was hot and very crowded. There was lots of shops and we bought lots of stuff.

Here I am by the Merlion which is half fish half lion. We went on a boat cruise that went past it.

This is the Marina Bay Sands building behind me. It has a boat canal running inside it's shopping mall. We went skating in the rink in the mall. The whole building lights up at night.

We also went to the Singapore Childrens Science Discovery Centre. There was lots of things for us to play with. In the afternoon we went next door to Snow City. We slid down the mountain on tyres.

We had to fly home overnight and it was hard to sleep on the plane. The food on the plane was gross.

I really enjoyed the trip!

We also got to perform live in front of the class and then put it on film.
We had to bring some costumes and Video-Cameras to School.
I know we all had a lot of fun and all of us showed great effort.
My favourite part was when we got to make up the routines and I really do hope one day we will get to do it again.

Our Spur-Winged Plover

A spur-winged plover has made a nest on the top field! It has laid four eggs. The plover is also called a masked plover or a masked lapwing. The plovers were brought from Australia in the 1930's.

The Spur-winged plover is 38 cm leisurely and heron like in flight, with an upright walk and tip- toeing run, this plover congregates in fields of root crops. Its wing spur is usually hidden. We have decided to call it .By Katie:) and Elena

How Bikes Work

We have been learning to write explanations, here is mine...

A bike is a two wheel object that has a handle bar and a seat. Bikes have been around ever since 1817 and are used for many things like transport.

When you push down on the pedal, the pedal will move the chain which is connected to one or more cogs and makes the wheel move. This makes the bike accelerate.

The brakes are under the handle and are used to stop the bike. When you push down on the brake it tightens the front wheel and makes you stop.

The handle is used to steer the bike; turn the handle to the right the and bike turns right .It only moves the front wheel. The handle has a steal bar connected to both sides of the cog which makes the wheel move.

Some bikes have gears which makes it harder or easier to ride.

Emperor's new clothes by Dylan

The Emperor’s New Clothes.
Years and years ago there was an emperor who loved to buy clothes. One day two

swindlers said to the emperor “We can make the finest cloth in the world “. So the

emperor gave them some money to make some cloth. They got out some looms

but kept the money to themselves, they pretended to make cloth . The emperor

sent one of his servants to see the cloth .He lied and said it looked good . The

emperor sent the governor to see the cloth and he also lied to him . So the

emperor went himself and he also couldn’t see the cloth . The next morning he put

on nothing and paraded in the park, and everyone said he was wearing nothing .

But the emperor kept on walking .
